A Message from the Directors
Dear
Parents,
As
you embark upon the search for a quality summer camp (day or resident) program
for your child be sure that the camp you select is an "accredited" camp. Make sure the camp is a member of The
American Camp Association. If
the camp is a private independent camp did they choose to increase their level
of professionalism by joining the Western Association of Independent Camps?
The criteria used for accreditation gives you
the assurance that the camp you are selecting has met over 80% of the standards
in the areas of Health, Safety, Emergency Procedures, Screening and Supervision
of Personnel, Program Activities, Transportation, Food, Facility Maintenance
and Business Administration. The
American Camp Association has a prescribed list of questions for you to ask of
each camp in order to provide you with more in depth information.
The reality is... you are placing that which
is "most precious to you" in the care and supervision of people you hardly
know. You must take all the necessary
steps to be assured of the fact that your child will have a safe, happy and fun
summer with someone who is as sensitive and caring about your child in the same
way as you. Talk and listen to your friends. Are their children happy at their camp? What do they like about it? Children have very diverse hobbies and
skills, likes and dislikes. Make sure
your child is being nourished and that they are most importantly...having FUN!
Sincerely,

Go Green from the Worldwatch Institute
Our Go Green column will share helpful
hints each month including things you can do today that will not only reduce
your ecological footprint, but also save you money and help you live a happier,
healthier life. (We call this a positive feedback loop.) Start with
this:
Re-route your commute.
Walk or bike to
work and save money on gas and parking while improving your
cardiovascular health and reducing your risk of obesity.
If you live far from your office,
investigate the option of telecommuting.
Or move closer-even if this means paying more rent, it could save you money in
the long term.

Effective Discipline Working With Your Children
5 Keys to effectively
discipline and guide your child...
- Be calm. Your neutral
tone shows your child you are standing your ground. Your calmness is contagious
and will help your child calm down.
- Be confident. If you want
your child to have a two-cookie or one-hour TV limit, then establish that those
are the rules in your home by enforcing them consistently and with confidence.
- Focus on your child. Say
his or her name when you give a directive and look directly at the child.
- Praise good behavior. Use
specific praise that reiterates the good thing your child did and what it
meant. "Thank you for sitting quietly and reading while I dressed your sister.
It made us all happy and able to get things done. You are becoming a
good reader."
- Gentle reminders. Time these appropriately. As your child leaves the bathroom, remind him or her
to hang the towel up.

We are in a Leap Year!
 February 29, 2008
Year 2008 is the next leap year, with 29 days in
February. February 2008 has five Fridays - it starts and ends on a Friday.
Between 1904 and 2096, leap years with same day of week for each date repeat
every 28 years which means that the last time February had 5 Fridays was in
1980 and next time will be in 2036.
What is a leap year?
A leap year is a year with one extra day inserted into February,
the leap year is 366 days with 29 days in February as opposed to the normal 28
days. (There are a few past exceptions to this)
Which years are leap years?
In the Gregorian calendar, which is the calendar used by
most modern countries, the following rules decide which years are leap years:
1. Every year divisible by 4 is a leap year.
2. But every year divisible by 100 is NOT a leap year
3. Unless the year is also divisible by 400, then it is
still a leap year.
This means that year 1800, 1900, 2100, 2200, 2300 and
2500 are NOT leap years, while year 2000 and 2400 are leap years. More

made and compiled. It is from this compilation that we determine as to which of
the past staff members will be returning. We are pleased to report that
we are receiving many re-applications at this time.
