Questions to Ask When Selecting a Camp for Your Child

    girls girls girls

When selecting a camp please use this list of questions to assist you in determining the proper camp for your child. Don't hesitate to ask questions when you meet with the director. He/she should welcome your questions and concerns.

  • What is your camp's philosophy?
  • Are you a member of the American Camp Association and when was your camp last accredited?
  • How many years has the camp been in existence and how long have you directed it and or owned it?
  • What are your qualifications as a camp director, and are you involved in the daily operation of the camp?
  • Discuss your staff and their qualifications including camper to staff ratios found within the various counseling groups in
    camp.
  • Describe your staff interview procedures and reference checks.
  • What does the camp do to maintain a safe environment as it pertains to emergencies and medical procedures?
  • Describe your transportation program including types of vehicles and driver training programs.
  • What percentage of staff and children return each summer?
  • How much time is allotted for activities, and are your activities held on your camp facility?
  • Which professional organizations do you belong to in order to maintain and improve the operation of your camp?

These questions have been compiled by the American Camp Association and the Association of Independent Camps in order to guide Parents in finding "A Quality Camping Experience For Your Child!"

Attention Parents:
Give Your Kids a World of Good

thanksgivingWe know you want the best for your children. You want them to have whatever it takes to be happy and successful, have good health, be able to get along with others, use good thinking and problem solving skills and have a good self-image. So do we!

Camp is a community designed specifically for children which provides the essential elements necessary for successful development and where having fun is a daily criteria.Cali-Camp Summer Day Camp believes camp gives kids a world of good. Child and youth development professionals also agree.

Peter Scales, Ph.D. is a senior fellow with the Search Institute in Minneapolis.Dr. Scales, a noted educator, author, psychologist who specializes in promoting positive development in children and youth says, "Camp is one of the few institutions where young people can experience and satisfy their need for physical activity, creative expression and true participation in a community environment. Most schools don't satisfy all these needs."

Adding to Scales' comments, Michael Popkin, Ph.D., a family therapist and founder and president of Active Parenting, states, "Camp offers a unique opportunity for children to stretch themselves in three vital areas: belonging, learning and contributing - beyond what is available at home and school.  I've seen personalities blossom at camp!"
