A Message from the Directors

Dear Parents,

Over the years we have had thousands of children pass through our doors at Cali-Camp Summer Day Camp!  Many came to us being very skeptical, shy and withdrawn. They left being happy, outgoing and excited about themselves, their new friends and the many new skills that they learned.

Last week a young woman, her parents, husband and three children came to see the camp.  She was vibrant and enthusiastic about her children coming to Cali-Camp for this summer. Throughout the afternoon she reminisced to them and to us about her experiences at Cali-Camp some 30 years before.  When she started sharing her memories she lit up like a star, had a gleam in her eyes and brought forth the greatest smile on her face.  She definitely remembered each of us and even brought several photos of our staff and campers of that time.  She shared stories of the many camp happenings and kept talking about the FUN they all had and shared together. She also talked about how she could remember about her own experiences, how she learned so much about herself and just how much the camp experience had transferred into her adult life.

She felt that camp looked different now then it did in her time. It appeared to be so much smaller. We hear this comment frequently because your perspective as adult changes. The one thing that doesn't change is ... the value of the Cali-Camp experience ... it lasts forever!

Now we have many second generation campers who spend there their summers at Cali-Camp.  Last summer's Camper of the Year is a second generation camper. Her mom was not only a camper; but a Junior Counselor and then a Counselor many moons ago.   She is so happy to be able to share her love of Cali-Camp with her daughter.  She sees the value of the camp experience to be ever so important to all children.  We are proud to have many campers that have older siblings that became staff members after being campers. Now the younger children are following in their footsteps.

We often reflect about how "only the names and faces change".  We take note of how many of our traditions have stood the test of time, while still bringing to children much happiness and success in their lives.  We are extremely proud to be able to offer the Cali-Camp experience to your child, just as we have done for the past generations.  We look forward to being of service to you and your family this summer.

Yours for quality day camping,

Pam and Saul

Your Taxes and the IRS

The IRS looks upon day camps as strictly child day care centers (although we know differently).  Because of their interpretation of who and what we are, they have established certain standards for you to claim exemptions for tuition payments made towards child care.  We are not up to date on these requirements so you should check with your tax advisor. You will need to have our Federal Identification Number in order to file:

Working With Your Children

This is the second in a 4 part series on Parenting.
  • Present choices. Instead of always telling your child not to do something, give your child choices such as, "do you want to put your socks on first or your shirt?" Just make sure you only give choices that if your child chooses, you will be comfortable with.
  • Don't ask, tell.  Asking "Are you ready for bed?" leaves the decision up to your child and the likely answer will be "no!" Try "Time for bed!" instead.  You are then instructing your child that it is time for bed and there is no negotiating.
  •  When...then. Tell your child when he completes an act of behavior you find appropriate (puts away a toy, finishes homework, brushes teeth), then something desirable for your child will happen (you can have a cookie, watch TV, check your email, call your friend on the phone.)

Go Green with
Cali-Camp

from the Worldwatch Institute

Our Go Green column will share helpful hints each month including things you can do today that will not only reduce your ecological footprint, but also save you money and help you live a happier, healthier life.

Buy used:

Whether you've just moved to a new area or are looking to redecorate, consider a service like craigslist or FreeSharing to track down furniture, appliances, and other items, rather than buying them new. Check out garage sales and thrift stores for clothing and other everyday items.  Take a course at your local college or adult school on Furniture re-finishing and learn to refinish recycled goods.

Use your creativity in gift giving, including making homemade gifts, donating to a good cause, or even regifting. (And gift green, in general.)
