Gendered Spaces at Cali Camp: Creating Safety, Choice, and Joy for Every Camper

At Cali Camp, we believe that every child deserves to feel safe, seen, and celebrated—exactly as they are. That’s why we’re committed to creating inclusive spaces where all campers, regardless of gender identity or expression, can thrive.

We recognize that gender is not binary, and while that understanding is increasingly accepted, it can still feel new or even confusing for many families navigating these conversations for the first time. That’s okay—we’re here to support both campers and parents through this journey, with compassion and care.

Why We Offer Gendered and Mixed-Gender Camp Groups

You may be wondering: If Cali Camp believes in gender inclusivity, why do we offer gendered groups at all?

It’s a great question—and the answer comes down to one thing: choice.

We offer both single-gender and mixed-gender groups because different campers feel most comfortable in different environments. Some kids thrive in all-gender spaces, while others feel more confident in groups that align with their gender identity. Our priority is always to honor each child’s comfort and safety, and we work closely with families to make sure campers are placed in the group that’s right for them.

The Magic of Gendered Spaces (When Campers Choose Them)

There’s something undeniably special that can happen in a shared space of peers who feel aligned in their identity. From the “Coyote Bro Code” to the “Doves Flock,” our gendered groups often develop strong bonds and a sense of shared identity that kids love. It’s the same reason many adults enjoy “girls’ night out” or having a “man cave”—those spaces can feel fun, safe, and empowering.

And from a child development standpoint, gendered groups can also create opportunities for growth.

How Gendered Spaces Can Break Down Stereotypes

Let’s take dancing as an example. In a mixed-gender group, some boys may hesitate to participate in dance activities due to outdated social pressures. But when it’s just a group of boys—led by a fun, confident male counselor who shows them that dancing is cool—those same kids go all-in, learning the moves to “Thriller” like pros.

In these moments, toxic masculinity gets dismantled—not through lectures, but through joyful, peer-supported play.

We see this on the flip side as well. In mixed-gender sports settings, especially with younger campers, some girls may opt out of activities, saying things like “the boys play too rough.” But in a single-gender group, those same girls are more likely to get in the game, try new skills, and develop a love for movement and play—on their own terms.

Supporting Every Camper, On Every Part of the Gender Spectrum

Of course, not every child fits into these patterns. Many of our campers love to dance, climb, create, and compete—no matter the group dynamic. That’s the beauty of offering options and creating a culture of acceptance.

If your camper identifies as nonbinary, gender-nonconforming, trans, or anywhere else on the gender spectrum, rest assured: Cali Camp is here for them. Our directors are always available to discuss placement options, pronouns, and the best ways to make your child feel supported.

Camp Is About Belonging

At the end of the day, camp should be a place where every child feels like they belong. Whether they want to soar on a zip line, paint a masterpiece, or form deep connections with their peers, Cali Camp gives them the space—and the freedom—to just be a kid.
